Knights Close Out AAC Swimming Championships on a High Note

KINGSPORT, Tenn. - The Knights had 3 individuals who received the All-Conference Scholar Award. This award is for Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater. The recipients for the St. Andrews men's and women's swim team were Leone van Rooyen, Willem van Niekerk (JR/Gaborone, Botswana), and Jeremiah Moretz (JR/Taylorsville, NC).

Each team selected one male and one female for the Champions of Characters. These individuals selected show great character and follow the NAIA 5 core values which are integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. The two recipients for the Knights were Sean Owens (FR/Morganton, NC) and Leone van Rooyen.

Highlights of Day Three:

  • Willem van Niekerk Medaling in 3rd place for the Men's 200-yard Butterfly with a time of 2:01.93.

  • Sean Owens performed a new personal best time in the Men's 1650 yard Freestyle with a time of 19:42.86. He also performed a personal best time in the Men's 200-yard Backstroke with a time of 2:20.40.

  • Angelina Poma (FR/Clinton Township, MI) performed a new personal best time in the Women's 1650 yard Freestyle with a time of 21:03.76

"It was a great night to finish the conference championships," said head coach Susana Martinez. "We had four personal best time swims today and had our first podium 3rd place finish from Willem van Niekerk!"

"Everyone left all they had in the pool and finished strong. I also want to make a big shout out to the women's swim team for placing 6th in team scores for the first time since 2017. They have worked hard to earn this place and I couldn't be prouder," added Martinez.
